To celebrate our new Mentoring Program, funded in part by the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership, we'll be recognizing each of our amazing mentors throughout 2011. This month's featured mentor is Ann Fitzgerald.
Ann Fitzgerald is a former Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket staff member who has come back as a volunteer to mentor one of our Club members. Ann has 30 years of nonprofit experience in the field of finance, and currently serves as the Finance Manager at Meeting Street. Ann enjoys spending time with her family, watching the Boston Red Sox and URI Rams, and spending time with her mentee, Shyanne.
What inspired you to take part in our mentoring program?
Having worked at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket I am very aware of the good work that is done at the Club. When I was asked to participate in the mentor program I was thrilled at the opportunity. I look forward to getting to know one of the Club's members and am hopeful that I can play a small but important role in developing this child's full potential.
What is your favorite thing about working with your mentee?
For the short time that I have participated in this program I have fully enjoyed spending time with my mentee, Shyanne. The one-on-one interaction we have had has allowed us to get to know each other. Shyanne is an outgoing and personal young lady. She is filled with enthusiasm and is very kind to others. Each time I meet with her, I not only learn something about her but I also learn something about myself. Shyanne has the ability to remind you of what is important in your life and to always appreciate what you have.
What is the most interesting thing you've learned about your mentee?
As difficult as life can be sometimes, what is really important is that you stay positive and surround yourself with people that care about you. One of the most important things you can give to others is your time and attention.
